I’m A Vegetarian By PoshMama

We have been having a “family only” day around here. It’s been filled with food, swimming, house cleaning, laundry and time spent together. There has been plenty of fighting and screaming (nothing but the usual) and now it’s time to relax.
Enjoy this week’s I’m A Vegetarianguest post by PoshMama…
When did I become a vegetarian? Well, I guess my answer is that I was born a vegetarian. As a young child I always had a true love for all animals and made no distinction between dogs, cats, horses, cows, pigs, sheep, etc. I loved them all because they were my friends. However, the most significant event happened at 5 years old when I helped my Grandmother in her vegetable garden. I remember planting the seeds with her and then checking on their progress until they magically turned into yummy vegetables. I was amazed that we had made our own food and it was delicious too.

Being a vegetarian in my household at such a young age was no easy matter because my mom was a meat and potatoes cook and a member of the clean plate club. Since I refused to eat the animal products she would have me sit at the table until I changed my mind which I never did. I remember spending a lot of nights after dinner sitting at the dining room table until she finally would be so frustrated with me that she would send me to my room. I was the only kid on the block who preferred broccoli over bacon!

Today, I still believe in the magic of growing your own vegetables and while living in the city doesn’t allow for a large vegetable garden, I do have a small rooftop garden that I enjoy very much. Of course I love going to the farmer’s market, talking with the farmers, learning how they grow things and buying what’s fresh and organic.

One of the greatest books I have read recently is The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone. The main reason I love this book is that it is not in-your-face about the subject and I have found it easy to gift to non-vegetarians who are willing to try the recipes (and they love them too!) Also, I can relate to the book as I am not dogmatic on my approach to living and do not try to “change” others. If someone asks me a question, I am happy to give them my opinion or what works for me but I love that people are individuals.

The only thing I hope you will do after reading this is go support your local farmers (especially the organic ones) because they make all the magic!
