i give up…

DESSERTS!!!

If you weren’t aware I have quite the sweet tooth.

I love anything that is sweet, chocolaty, pie-like, little, big, hot, cold, cakey, on top of ice cream, underneath ice cream or even inside ice cream!! I love desserts. It used to not be that big of a deal because if I didn’t keep anything like that in the house I wasn’t tempted. End of story. But now that we own the deli and carry cookies, cupcakes, brownies and pie resisting temptation has been pretty hard.

I would like to attribute my almost 10lb weight gain since opening the deli to the variety of sweets that we own. And I often do.

I’ve challenged myself to give up desserts before and always caved because the girls had candy lying around…

A certain restaurant dessert was so tempting…

Or Trader Joe’s went and made the best damn ice cream I have ever eaten in my life!! (bastards…)

I must preface this part by saying:

I am not Catholic. I am not anything. I have my own relationship with God, but it has nothing to do with going to church on Sundays or any other day. I believe in a higher power and talk to “him” regularly while I shower, do yoga, lie in bed before falling asleep or just after waking. I don’t begrudge anyone their beliefs, actions involving church and I hope that you will do the same for me.

Every year I give something up for lent.

I’ve given up things like soda, make up, coffee, fast food (when I ate it), carbonated beverages and cigarettes. I’m pretty sure that I have always stuck to my choice and made it the whole 40 days.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of lent.

For the next 40 days Catholics will give up meat on Fridays, attend mass, go to confession and repent their sins.

I will be continuing to talk to God the way I see fit, confessing my sins to who ever wants to listen to me rattle off at the mouth (which I do a lot), practicing yoga and using that time to connect with myself and my thoughts, meditate while I’m in the shower and giving up desserts for the next 40 days.

WHY??

People often ask me why I even bother. They can’t understand why someone who isn’t even catholic would waste their time giving up something they love for 40 days. My answer is always the same…

I like a challenge.

This whole thing couldn’t have come at a better time too! I’m really working hard at getting in shape (you know – toned and all) and giving up desserts for the next 40 days will be a great addition to my workout regimen.

I’m hoping that all this yoga and meditating I’ve been doing will help me get through my “dessert withdrawals” because let’s be honest…

Mama likes her desserts!

Today I’m thankful for:

…sugar free gum

…propel water bottle packets

…green tea

…Justin’s chocolate peanut butter (that’s not a dessert, right!?)

…words with friends
